Five Questions With: Judith

Five Questions With: Judith

Meet Judith, an impeccable shop with an incredible staff. I love how Brooke mentions mentorship below, as she has been something of a mentor to me as well! We absolutely adore working with her and everyone at Judith, and wish we could teleport out to Maine for monthly visits.

1. Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Brooke Beaney & I am the founder/owner/operator of Judith in Portland, ME (& soon to be Portsmouth, NH)

2. How did you decide to open Judith?

I was a clothing designer for almost 10 years in New York City, during which time I worked with some really inspiring independent store owners. Some of them were willing to let me pick their brains over drinks, after hours & I took notes, seeking out advice, information, connection & references.

When we decided it was time to leave NYC we looked for an up & coming, creative city where my husband could do what he was doing at the time (business development) & that we thought could sustain the sort of store I had dreamt Judith to be…I wanted to do something that I would be excited & inspired to find in the city but in a place that allowed for the time & space to really breathe it all in.

I loved designing, especially with my mentor & creative director Susie Cho, but I always knew I wanted to use my technical & styling background to have a shop of my own one day; where I could tell the stories of my designers & their processes & work with clients directly.

3. Can you tell us how you first discovered CARLEEN?

Oh my gosh - I think it was 2015? I know you came & did a very fun trunkshow

with us in 2016 in our original space on Market St:) Did we meet at a trade show? I cannot imagine not knowing you and your line but also can’t remember how it all began!

4. What does your customer appreciate about CARLEEN?

Our customer was initially drawn in by the repurposed quilts I think…which I know you began doing as far back as your final collection at Pratt, right?

The tie vests with the black bias bindings were so ghostly & cool…one of my early favorite pieces we had in the shop.
I think the enduring characteristics of the brand that our customer appreciates most are the ease, the limited nature of the pieces (love that they are numbered), the nostalgia in the fabrication, and the playfulness.

5. We’re coming to Portland to shop at Judith- what’s another place we must check out while we’re in the neighborhood?

Mr. Tuna for the Ice Cream Toastee. It’s a buttery, salty, hot pocket of house made

ice cream. And you cannot get them to go…I have asked.
